When Alexander was 11, Philonicus, a horse dealer, brought a wild black horse to Philip worth 13 talents ($78,000) as a present. None of his expert horseman could climb on it, so Philip was going to send it away. Alexander exclaimed, “They are losing a wonderful horse because of their lack of skill.” His father said, “No one should accuse others of failure if he cannot succeed.” Alexander had noticed that the horse seemed skittish because of its shadow, so he held the bridle and kept it facing the sun till the horse calmed down. Then he leaped on its back and rode out of sight. When he returned, he showed his father how he could make the horse run, walk, and halt. Philip exclaimed, “Look for a kingdom worthy of you, my son. Macedon is too small for you!” Alexander named the horse Bucephalus, which means ox-head.24 The horse was soon outfitted with a red bridal and saddlecloth.25 Learn more about his fascinating story....
