John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” What happens to a tomato when it perishes?
Christian parents tell their children, “Jesus loves you so much that he gave his life for you on the cross. Right now, he’s in heaven with God interceding for you. And, oh by the way, my dear child, if you don’t accept Jesus as your personal savior, God will burn you alive in hell forever and ever and ever!”1
Wow! Can you imagine what little Mary or Johnny must be thinking? It’s no wonder that when children get older, they don’t believe in a God of love. To them, he is harsh and cruel, and they leave the church.2
The following verses from the Bible describe God’s character. Does this sound like a torturer whose vengeance is never satisfied?
“He himself is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.” Luke 6:35
“Shall not the judge of all the earth do what is just?” Genesis 18:15
“The Lord your God is gracious and compassionate, and he will not turn away from you if you turn back to him.” II Chronicles 30:9
“God is love.” I John 4:8
Since God is loving and all powerful, would he allow someone to suffer in agony forever? Is it justice to allow someone to suffer forever?
We love our children. Do we think that we love them more than God does? “Is there a father among you who will offer his son a snake when he asks for a fish, or a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you, then, bad as you are, know how to give you children what is good for them, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?” Luke 11:11-13.
Yet the majority of Christian churches today teach the doctrine of eternal punishment for the wicked. How can the righteous sleep at night or knowing the wicked are enduring continuous torture right now screaming in agony?3
Charles Darwin called it a damnable doctrine and said most of his friends and relatives would now be in endless agony. So he developed his theory of evolution with disastrous results worldwide. Actress Shirley MacClain was raised a Baptist, but she could not believe in endless hell and rejected Christianity.
Take a closer look at what the Bible really says. Examine all the evidence.
